Frensham 3rds vs Grayshott 3rds - 10th May 2025

Ben Custance13 May - 07:33

Frensham replicated the drama of the previous week, with a stunning three wicket victory over a strong Grayshott side with two balls to spare.

The skipper won the toss and put Grayshott into bat.

New opening bowling combination this week, Matt Findlay and Mark Shine with the new ball. Both started well, Findley regularly hitting a good length outside off stump, while Shine was generating some prodigious in-swing.

After some resolute defence, Flavell played another pristine forward defence, only to see his off-stump knocked back as Findley ripped one away off the seam. A crucial phase of the game ensued, veterans Wheble and Clapham set about building a strong total. Clapham was the more assured, driving positively through extra cover, Wheble resisted with stout defence, but could not find his timing with more attacking shots.

The Frensham bowlers stuck to their task, and were backed up with some excellent fielding. Bone in particular, put in a huge shift on the vast leg-side boundary, hunting down anything in range. Clapham eased his way to 30, before contriving to hit a Clayton-Jones long-hop to Sam Strang-Steel at mid-wicket.

Wheble belatedly found some timing with some lofted drives, these same strokes soon proved his downfall, picking out Strang-Steel on the boundary. Scanclon looked to accumulate, knocking the ball into the vast open spaces and running hard. Sam Arnold was introduced and immediately found plenty of movement with the older ball, bowling House and Aggar with some terrific deliveries.

Scanlon continued to anchor the innings before Findlay returned to bowl him with a full, straight delivery. Kennedy and Brayshaw found some late innings momentum. Shine picked up a deserved wicket, trapping Joyce bang in front of all three, before Findlay bowled Kennedy. Grayshott finished on 178-8, Findlay and Arnold were the pick of the bowlers, with three wickets. Page, while wicketless, bowled a crucial spell to quieten the two Grayshott big guns.

Strang-Steel and Morris opened up against the potent new ball attack of Brayshaw and Mullin. Strang-Steel made batting look very simple, with some beautiful drives, while initially these found fielders, he soon started to pierce the infield. Morris found run scoring more of a challenge, eventually missing a straight one from Mullin. Ellen was on the attack from the off, cutting his first ball for four. He soon followed this up with a number of hooks for four, off some curiously short bowling. Ellen was bowled, uncharacteristically playing a forward defense. When Frost and Scribe fell soon after, we were in a spot of bother.

Enter stage right, Bone, busy and positive from the off, proved the ideal foil for Strang-Steel as they took the score above 100. Strang-Steel was starting to open up now and played some imperious shots to any loose deliveries. Bone continued to look for boundaries before falling to a catch in the ring for a well made 32. Arnold continued the momentum, but was again caught in the ring trying to force the score along.

Strang-Steel continued to accumulate, but eventually lost patience and was caught at cover. He played brilliantly, holding the innings together.

In these situations, calm heads are required, and are there any calmer than Page. Picking the gaps, running hard. As Findlay found his feet and started to unfurl those mighty leavers.

It soon became clear that the game was edging towards Frensham as the Grayshott faithful willed their team on from the sidelines.

Findlay took control once again, hitting a mighty six over mid-wicket and a four through long-on to leave 10 needed off the final over.

A brutal straight hit for four left Frensham needing six runs off the final three deliveries. Dot ball, no panic from the skipper. The next ball was sent into orbit, launched for six over the largest boundary on the pitch. Cue pandemonium from the jubilant Frensham team, a famous win from a very difficult pitch. A masterclass from the captain, 47 not out from 41 balls.

So, despite being second best for most of the first two games, we find ourselves two from two. Next week, we play top of the league and will need more from the collective rather than relying on the brilliance of individuals.
